EPA Increases Regulation on Carbon Nanotubes

National Nanomanufacturing Network: In the June 24 Federal Register notice, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency put forth two significant new use rules under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) for 23 chemical substances, including single- and multi-walled carbon nanotubes.

This new regulation, which goes into effect on August 24, impacts all those who plan to manufacture, import, or process any of the 23 listed chemicals for an activity that is designated as a significant new use. As stated in a November 2008 Federal Register notice, the EPA classifies carbon nanotubes as a new substance under TSCA.
